Get connected to the Outdoors

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Santa obviously thought I was a good girl this year as he gave me an iPod for Christmas. As well as being able to listen to music while out walking, it has also opened up the world of podcasts to me. It's not just 'The Archers' and Terry Wogan you can listen to, either! Any subject you can think of can be covered in a podcast. Some are radio-style broadcasts; others are 'vodcasts' which offer graphics and videos as well. Many are produced regularly, so you can subscribe to them and always have the latest offerings delivered automatically. From regular snow reports to magazine-style articles to simply stunning footage of great scenery and sports action, here are a few with an outdoor theme to inspire you. But have a search around the Web and in iTunes to find much, much more on whatever takes your interest:

Between Highland Storms

Monday, December 22, 2008

After a cold and snowy November and early December the weather has got milder and stormier here, so when a day looks good the best thing to do is to put Christmas chores to one side and get out if you can. We have had a series of Atlantic weather systems coming in on the West Coast over the last week brining stormy, rainy weather but by Friday Saturday was forecast to be fair, so I just had to jump on my bike and get out for an hour or two. I am glad I did because the bad weather returned on Sunday but not before I had got in some cracking views of Ardgour and Ardnamurchan from the Ballachulish Bridge.

Whatever outdoor activities you fancy, keep up to date with all the weather in the West Highlands over Christmas and the New Year by checking out the Outdoor Capital weather pages.,

Winter Walking in the Highlands

Monday, December 08, 2008

The cold and snowy snap continued in Lochaber until Sunday. I went out for a quick stroll on Saturday, which was another blue sky day, and took this pic of a view through from Kinlochleven to the snowy Mamores. It was so cold I decided it was too risky to run or cycle as there was still a lot of compacted snow and ice around. We had a warmer, blowy day on Sunday so I headed south and east for a hill walk where the colder conditions hung on. But we have colder weather predicted this week and everyone is hoping this early cycle of freeze/thaw continues as it is laying down a great base for winter climbing and ski-ing.

Winter arrives early in the Highlands

Thursday, December 04, 2008

Although temperatures have lifted a little today here in the Highlands in the Outdoor Capital we have been enjoying a week of cold and snowy weather. Last weekend gave us great views with blue skies and snow. I was hillwalking and it was tough going breaking trail through the snow but the views from the summits more than compensated for the effort of getting up there.

Unfortunately higher winds last night meant that snow was blown off the hills which might make walking easier but means any chance of ski-ing at the weeekend is off.

Fingers crossed that the weather is as good this weekend as last, and even if not ski-ing, we can enjoy beautiful snowy views again.
